The Department of History was established in 1975. It was initiated primarily as a teaching department for History General Course. Later it received affiliation to teach Honours Course in 1984. Being one of the compulsory subjects in B.A. examination. The early records tell the name of Dr. Basubendra Basu who joined the college as a lecturer in department of History. For more than four decades, this department has produced able students, researchers, teachers, and a number of academicians who have received acclamation from every corner of the country.

Currently the department offers History Honours under new CBCS curriculum of 2018, History Core Courses and Generic Electives are offered. The department also conducts study tour every year for the students. It also received various seminars and research grants from UGC, ICSSR etc. time to time. The department has a staff strength of twelve faculties. The department is regularly engaged in serious academic exercises like invited lectures, seminars, showing documentaries and films, taking students to lectures by eminent historians, educational trips etc. Among the twelve faculty members, 3 members have been awarded M. Phill degrees. Overall, a healthy academic environment and a cordial teacher student relation is maintaining in the department.
The departmental teachers are engaged in regular research on a host of subjects in various fields of history like private health in Independent India, History of weapons and firearms in the revolutionary phase in colonial India, Settlements and Urbanization in early India.
